Get Growing, Victoria! Distribution Partner Organization

We are excited to be a distribution partner organization with Get Growing, Victoria!

This City of Victoria program provides food seedlings and soil-building materials with a priority to support underserved communities. The goals of the program are to grow food, grow gardeners, and grow community!

We are a part of the collective of neighbourhood associations and community centers across the city helping to distribute seedlings and soil-building materials provided through Get Growing, Victoria!

2025 Spring Soil-Building Materials Distribution

What: Soil-Building Materials Distribution (Compost, Leaf Mulch, Wood Chips)

When: Saturday, March 15, from 11 am- 1 pm

Where: Oaklands Community Centre (#1-2827 Belmont Avenue)

Building healthy soil is a critical activity to support healthy ecosystems, and growing healthy, abundant gardens. Materials will be available while supplies last. Please bring your own shovel and containers.  Free leaf mulch, compost and woodchips will be available at our location on March 15 at 11am-1pm, and at other locations throughout Victoria between March 12-22.  Learn more and find a distribution day near you at victoria.ca/getgrowing.

Notes on safe and appropriate use of the materials:

o  Leaf mulch is from residential leaf collection program

o  Wood chips are from City’s arborist operations

o  Compost is from materials collected through regular Parks operations (e.g. soil, plant materials, etc) and is NOT a high nutrition soil amendment. It is better suited for soil structure and bulk.

o  All materials are tested annually to ensure they’re safe for gardening use AND safe handling measures are still required, as with any soil. This includes using gloves, and/or washing hands after use.

o  Compost Education Centre has factsheets on Urban Leaves, Mulching and Best Practices for Urban Gardens with more information.
